Building a wedding-day timeline your photographer will love

Building a wedding-day timeline your photographer will love

How a thoughtful schedule protects the moments that matter — from getting ready to the first dance — and keeps the day relaxed.

A wedding day moves fast. A good timeline isn't about rigid control — it's about giving every important moment enough room to breathe, so nothing is rushed and nobody is stressed.

Start with the moments you can't repeat

List the non-negotiables first: the ceremony, the first look or first meeting, family portraits, and the reception highlights. Build the rest of the day around them, not the other way around.

Allow time for getting ready

The quiet moments — jewellery, buttons, a parent's embrace — often become the most treasured images. Aim to have hair and makeup finished 45–60 minutes before you need to leave so the details can be photographed calmly.

Plan family portraits properly

Write a short list of the groupings you want and appoint one relative who knows everyone to gather them. A well-organised family session takes 20–30 minutes; a disorganised one can eat an hour of your day.

Build in a buffer

Things run late — it's normal. Padding the schedule by 15–20 minutes around transitions keeps the whole day on track, and gives us space for the unplanned, candid moments that make wedding stories feel alive.
